Why Transmission Service Matters
Why Transmission Fluid Changes Matter
One of the easiest ways to help protect your transmission is also one of the most commonly overlooked: changing the transmission fluid.
Transmission fluid has a tough job. It lubricates internal components, carries heat away from the transmission, provides hydraulic pressure, and helps the clutches and other components operate correctly. Every time you drive, that fluid is exposed to heat, pressure, and normal internal wear.
Transmission Fluid Doesn't Last Forever
Heat is one of a transmission's biggest enemies. Over time, repeated heating and cooling causes the fluid and its additives to break down.
As transmission fluid ages, it may lose some of its ability to lubricate, control heat, and provide the characteristics the transmission was designed to operate with. Normal wear can also introduce clutch material and other contaminants into the fluid.
That doesn't mean dark fluid automatically means a transmission has failed, but fluid condition can tell us a lot about what's happening inside the unit.
When Should You Change It?
There isn't one mileage interval that's right for every vehicle.
The correct service depends on the transmission, manufacturer's recommendations, type of fluid, mileage, and how the vehicle is driven. Vehicles that tow, carry heavy loads, spend a lot of time in stop-and-go traffic, or operate under other severe conditions may require more frequent service.
That's why we prefer to look at the vehicle and its service history rather than automatically recommending the same service interval to everyone.
Maintenance Is Cheaper Than Transmission Repair
A transmission fluid service can't undo existing internal damage, but properly maintaining the fluid can help reduce unnecessary wear and extend transmission life.
At Tex's Auto Care in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, transmissions have been one of our specialties for years. If you're unsure when your transmission was last serviced—or whether it should be serviced at all—we can inspect the vehicle, check the fluid and help you determine the appropriate next step.
